07.-09.02.14: 11. und 8. Klassen in Paris

Bericht: Rebecca Wolfer

On the traces of Ernest Hemingway in Paris: This was the motto of the weekend – trip of the English and French major classes and the French minor class of the year 11.

We went there from the 7th to the 9th of February by bus. Right after arriving after a six hour drive we did a city tour by night. It was very interesting to see Paris in the darkness when all the lights were shining (a highlight was the flashing Eiffel tower at 10pm).

The next day we started a walking tour in order to see the places which inspired the author Ernest Hemingway and about which he wrote in his stories. At each stop we listened to a presentation given by an expert group on the specific place or topic (e.g. Paris in the 1920s, the Musée d'Orsay, Impressionist paintings, Paul Cézanne or Gertrude Stein). We visited the house where Hemingway lived, the Pantéon, the Jardin du Luxemburg and after taking a lunch break in a typical French "Bistro" the English class went to see the Impressionist paintings that inspired this famous American author while the French major students could choose between seeing the Musée d'Orsay (where many important impressionist artworks are –amongst others – on display) or the Louvre. After two hours spent in the repective museums we had time to ourselves and went by metro to the Galeries Lafayette or onto the Eiffel tower in groups.

On Sunday we paid a visit to Montmarte, the quarter where all the artists lived. The weather was fantastic and we entered the church of Sacre Coeur where a mass was held at that time. We were able to buy souvenirs in the various tourist shops, too. Then we went into the city center where we saw the shop where Hemingway bought books in English and admired the church of Notre Dame de Paris. Afterwards we could choose what we would like to do on our own before we went home by bus in the afternoon.

Everyone liked the trip very much. For many of us it was their first time in Paris. We visited interesting sights and, thanks to Ernest Hemingway, we discovered parts of this great city which are less frequently visited by tourists.
